Udon Party
Hi everyone!
One afternoon we decided to make udon together. (Do you know udon? They are thick, chewy noodles).
Since we're at it, why don't we make the noodles from scratch instead of buying them? we said, and here we are!
Deciding on the spur of the moment to have a party between staff and guests is part of the fun of staying at a hostel, isn't it?
We bought wheat udon flour and mixed it with some warm water and salt.
The udon dough is quite tough so traditionally to soften it it's kneaded by stepping on it! (safely wrapped in cling film and bags, don't worry!)
Some guests from Belgium helped us do that.
They love cooking and took part in many cooking classes and workshops during their stay in Japan!
Apparently, the common soy sauce and miso that cost about 300 yen in Japan are as expensive as 1000 yen each in Belgium.
Even so, they want to keep enjoying Japanese cuisine after going back too, so they asked us a lot of questions.
Personally I enjoy coming up with creative solutions for using things we have on hand instead of buying things.
For example we didn't have a rolling pin, but we used a roll of cling film and were able to stretch the dough with no issues!
Here are our handmade udon!
The length and thickness is not uniform like the store bought udon's, but the texture and taste were really good!
We ate them with poached eggs, fried tofu with soy sauce and sugar, leeks and miso dipping sauce.
We thought we'd made too much but we finished it all up!
It was the last night in Japan for our two lovely guests from Belgium.
They loved plat hostel keikyu so much that they extended their stay.
We didn't want to say goodbye :(
Let's meet again one day, definitely!
We will miss you guys but please come visit us again.
Everyone enjoyed the udon party so we will definitely hold another one in the future!
